Tile installation cost is the barrier for a majority of homeowners, but what very few realize is the value added to the home almost always far exceeds project cost. When choosing what features to install it is important to consider both what you want short-term and what would potentially add the most value in the future. While you may wanter darker tile or fixtures to match current decorations, lighter fixtures and tile styles could prove a more eye-catching option when looking to eventually sell the home.
On average, removing your old fiberglass or plastic shower / tub surround and replacing it with a walk-in shower will be around $6,000 - $8,000 and will add $10,000 - $15,000 to the home's value depending on features. That being said - walk-in showers are not the perfect choice for every occasion; if you are space-constrained then you may opt to install a tub with tile walls and that installation can range from $4,000 - $6,000. Each shower install usually goes like this: removal of the old furnishings and walls, plumbing of the drain and pouring/forming of the new shower pan/floor, plumbing the new shower furnishings, installation of cement board walls, moisture barrier application and drying, mortar and tile installation, grout and caulking, then finally all of the cleanup. You will want to plan a few days for a shower installation because many of these steps require curing and drying times before the next step can be executed.
Where most people stop their creativity is with the tile color choices, door choices, and different fixtures; but how many corner shelves do you want? Do you want an in-set wall shelf?
